Join Whitfield Reaves to learn how to diagnose this common source of foot pain, and treat both plantar fasciitis as well as the more current condition often called plantar fasciosis. They are different conditions, need differentiation, and there are several creative and precise treatments that can assist clinically. The practitioner needs to understand how to target the tissues of the fascia as well as including the all important abductor hallucis muscle. Often left out of heel pain treatments, this muscle to the big toe plays a significant role in both pain and the healing process. The practitioner, with this information, can find some more gentle and relatively pain free point combinations to use in treating plantar pain. After the lecture, we will have an audience Q&A session with Whitfield. This session is designed to make sure each practitioner is clear on the precise treatment needed in plantar fasciitis and plantar fasciosis. But we intend to open up the rest of this free webinar to all questions. "Ask us anything", on any topic of sports acupuncture. This should be fun! For our friends in timezones that can not join us live, feel free to register to watch the recording.

Nutrition is within the scope of practice of California acupuncturists but in our schools we are not trained to use individual amino acids and a pro-recovery diet to quickly stop cravings for drugs, behaviors, and food. Yet, decades of research and empirical evidence support these quick and efficient treatment modalities. Meanwhile, during COVID-19, citizens isolated and quarantined are eating and drinking like never before. Sales of alcohol have increased 55% this year compared to last year at this time and the Mayo Clinic calls the result of our new compulsive eating habits "the quarantine 15". This presentation reminds participants that their patients may not list overeating or over drinking or over drugging on the intake form but a great number of them ARE in the throes of addiction. Food addiction, alone, is the most dangerous and most common addiction in the United States, causing obesity and diabetes at epic levels in younger and younger individuals. On top of that anxiety and depression are epidemic and most commonly treated with pharmaceuticals such as SSRIs, SNRIs, and highly addictive benzodiazepines. Yet we as acupuncturists have at our fingertips not only excellent acupuncture points as a response, but also useful nutritional tools in amino acids and menu choices. I will detail each of the five amino acids that are useful to respond to patient needs, with results apparent within fifteen minutes, and offer the simple questionnaire that helps the practitioner figure out what the patient's most pressing needs are at that time. The same questionnaire helps both patient and practitioner figure out what dose is needed and when the supplements can be stopped.
Carolyn began using acupuncture for addiction treatment in substance abuse treatment programs in 1992 in Sacramento, CA. Carolyn has lectured at state and national conferences, written magazine articles and is the founding director of the Alliance for Addiction Solutions.

Auricular Medicine is a specialty within Traditional Chinese Medicine that has its roots in the Huang Di Nei Jing and some of its branches in Western Medicine. Using the micro-system of the Auricle, Auricular Medicine has developed into an incredibly sophisticated system of both diagnosis and treatment of all bio-systems of the body. The diagnosis is remarkably comprehensive and accurate. Without a patient interview, or history, the examination alone provides the doctor with more information than the patient’s intake paperwork. Treatment can relieve acute pain within seconds. Dr. TruthSayer’s introduction includes many interesting cases from her clinical practice.
Dr. TruthSayer, DAOM, Dip.OM, LAc, LMFT, is a President Emeritus of the California State Oriental Medical Association, and a former faculty member of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco. We often come to expect that many a case is complicated and requires analysis and the assessment is layered and complex. Yet, Occam's Razor, a somewhat obscure tenant of philosophy, states that, simply expressed, "the simplest solution is most likely the right one”. Whitfield Reaves will present five common sports injury and pain syndromes, and explain how it is common and likely that each of these cases could be treated by one specific point. No longer the long list of point combinations to cover all aspect of the presentation of the patient – one point. Of course, we would need know how to correctly locate and needle the point, but, what a relief. One point, and great results. While of course this is not always possible, listen to Whitfield's adaptation of Occam's theory of "keeping it simple", and its application in medicine. And, maybe even come away with one-point treatment plans for a few common injuries! As human beings, we cannot be without emotions. At the same time, emotions disturb us to the point that we act no more with reason or intelligence. When a situation triggers an emotion, it is usually an important matter needing an accurate reaction, true to life; and it is precisely that what the emotions prevent us to do. The classical Chinese medicine’s approach of emotions, specially agitation and anxiety, exposes what happens inside ourselves, in our heart-mind, as well as in our blood and qi, our organs, and gives leads to regulate ourselves and to come back to a more balanced assessment of the situation and efficient action.

Humans have a very important role in the unity of man and nature. We in fact are an organized whole and encompass both being a part of nature and managing nature. The ancient Chinese metaphysics concept of the Three Essences (Sān Cái 三才) - Heaven, Earth and Humankind, can be applied and seen in various aspects of our life, and in concepts such as harmony of body, mind and spirit. In this short introductory webinar, see how the integration of these Three Essences apply within Acupuncture itself, as well as in our life as a whole. This course provides a brief introduction to the basic foundations of the metaphysical origins and framework of Sān Cái 三才 → The Three Essences of life in Chinese Metaphysics. The Three Essences are the ancient Chinese metaphysics concept of the unity and harmony of man and natural law - Heaven - Tiān 天, Earth - Rén 人 and Humankind - Dì 地. This concept can be applied and seen in various aspects of our life, and in aspects such as the harmony of body, mind and spirit. Students will learn some history of Feng Shui, Astrology and the Five Elements/Phases, and have a peek into how it is integrated with Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

See In StorePlease Note: This course is presented in English and is verbally translated into German during the presentation. The workshop focuses on the process of co-building a working alliance. We discuss some main features of the therapeutic relationship: the structure of communication and the emotional, mental, physical space of the treatment. We see how to deal with: the daily management of time, requests, money the dynamics of empathy and neutrality the deep movements stirred up by the use needles the expression of hidden or violent emotions the yin attitude of “being there” We work with illnesses and suffering, it is a delicate matter. The encounter of patient and practitioner requires a specific attention. To improve therapeutic results we need not to be submerged by what takes place inside the relationship. The classics give a great attention to it – quotations will be discussed in the workshop. Clinical cases are given throughout all the issues.

Mastering the Treatment of Injury and Pain is a webinar series for the serious practitioner of orthopedic and sports acupuncture. In these courses, Whitfield Reaves describes specific treatment protocols for common injury and pain syndromes. Emphasis is on diagnosis and assessment, including anatomical understanding the numerous types of tissues involved, such as trigger points, motor points, tendons, and ligaments. Course 9 covers: (1) The Achilles. Achilles tendonitis and tendonosis is not always simple. Precise treatments into predictable areas of stagnation is usually effective. And always check for involvement of the achilles bursae. (2) The Lateral ankle. Acupuncture offers useful approaches to treating acute ankle sprain. Chronic cases target the talar sinus at GB 40 and are also effective. (3) The Plantar fascia. Treatment of plantar fasciitis need not be painful when the right approaches are taken to treating the heel. And the inclusion of the abductor hallucis muscle is often effective. (4) Other foot injures. The big toe joint can be treated by “threading the joint space”. Metatarsal neuroma and other foot injuries use treatments with similar precise local needle insertion. The material of this webinar series is the integration of traditional Chinese acupuncture with western orthopedic and sports medicine. We structure these courses in order to increase practitioner confidence in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of the lower extremity. This webinar series is designed to be viewed in sequential order. We strongly recommend that the practitioner complete the courses of this series from beginning to end.

Emphasis is on diagnosis and assessment, including anatomical understanding the numerous types of tissues involved, such as trigger points, motor points, tendons, and ligaments. Course 7 begins with an introduction to sports acupuncture, important for all practitioners to review. And a discussion on biomechanical causes of pain and injury follows. (1) The Gluteus medius. Covered in the two courses on the low back and hip, the gluteus medius stabilizes the pelvis, and may contribute to lower extremity repetitive stress injures. It should not be missed by the practitioner. (2) “Runner’s knee”. Ilio-tibial band syndrome is common in athletes and the active, and with proper assessment, is an easy-to-treat injury. (3) The Hamstrings. Hamstring strain is prevalent with the explosive athlete, like sprinters with rapid acceleration and deceleration. Treatment gives the practitioner many possible zones, including the muscle belly, trigger points, and motor points. In these courses, Whitfield Reaves describes specific treatment protocols for common injury and pain syndromes. Emphasis is on diagnosis and assessment, including anatomical understanding of the numerous types of tissues involved, such as trigger points, motor points, tendons, and ligaments. Course 1 is an introduction to acupuncture sports medicine. We must understand what anatomical and orthopedic acupuncture is, and how it is used in a modern setting. This course continues with describing “anatomically significant points”. It is essential to understand how each of the different anatomical structures respond to needle insertion, electrical stimulation, and other approaches like moxa and cupping. For instance, needle insertion into a muscle belly will be quite different than tapping on a ligament. And if there is fibrosis, the point density increases. The concept of fibrosis brings clarity to what we call in traditional Chinese medicine stagnation of qi and stagnation of blood. And finally, the Four Steps, developed by the presenter, then becomes a guide to treatment. Each step has a specific role in the protocol, and as a whole, these Four Steps offer structure to the treatment of pain and injury. Understanding the Four Steps is a significant benefit for the practitioner, as it often assures that the proper treatment is not overlooked. This webinar series is designed to be viewed in sequential order. We strongly recommend that the practitioner complete the courses of this series from beginning to end.

Abdominal acupuncture is a relatively new form of acupuncture which was developed by Prof. Bo ZhiYun over the course of approximately 20 years, it was introduced in China in 1991. It is still relatively unknown in many parts of the West and offers a comprehensive and powerful system to treat a multitude of Muscular-skeletal, painful, acute and chronic conditions (see Dave Shipsey’s book “Mastering the Art of Abdominal Acupuncture, a concise guide to treating numerous painful conditions” the only book written in English on this topic). It is a Micro-System with Mega Power, for many reasons, which will be detailed in this webinar. Abdominal acupuncture is easy to incorporate into your practice, it is simple to learn and once the subtleties of this system are understood and refined it can be performed in a fast effective and reliable way. It offers clients an almost pain-free form of acupuncture that has many nurturing effects which enables it to give a multitude of side benefits that are more far reaching than regular acupuncture. It allows many problems to be treated in one session without the need for complicated prescription formulation or complex diagnosis. This webinar is designed to give you an understanding of all aspects of Abdominal Acupuncture necessary to utilize this wonderful pain - free system in your clinic. You will discover why abdominal acupuncture packs such a powerful therapeutic punch, and you will also learn a number of tried and tested methods to treat a variety of commonly seen painful conditions. The theory is supported with real life case histories from Dave Shipsey’s practice. There are also two live demonstrations which will allow you to observe the subtleties of abdominal diagnosis, point location, abdominal needle techniques and formulating abdominal prescriptions. You can observe the abdominal treatment protocol in a step - by - step manner, so that you are confident to use this system upon completion.
Dave Shipsey is a Registered Acupuncturist, author, and International teacher of Abdominal Acupuncture. Dave has been teaching Abdominal Acupuncture since 2011 and published the first English book on the subject “Mastering the Art of Abdominal Acupuncture”, in 2015.
In this webinar, Professor Gumenick will present the components of a Classical Five-Element Acupuncture initial interview. Attendees will learn about the specific areas of inquiry that constitute a medical history, personal history, and systems review. Attendees will learn the skills of looking and questioning deeper than surface responses to glean the diagnostic information as to the underlying elemental imbalance (AKA Causative Factor), which is the key to Classical Five-Element treatment.

Yin Sotai is a gentle evolution of Sotai, an already gentle East Asian bodywork style that is often combined with acupuncture treatments in Japan. Its founder was Keizo Hashimoto, MD of Sendai, Japan. Both Sotai and Yin Sotai are best understood as indirect methods of bodywork, which is to say that the patient will engage in pleasant movements away from pain and restriction. Yin Sotai is best understood as a sort of neuromuscular re-education for the patient. Often, just incorporating ten minutes of this sort of bodywork with acupuncture can increase its effectiveness tremendously.

Accurate point location is essential for acupuncture treatment to be effective. Regardless of the accuracy of interviewing and rapport skills, diagnostic assessments of the patient’s needs, pulse findings, and selection of points, if we miss the point, we have done no treatment. These 4 one-hour recorded webinars cover some of the most important and commonly used non-command points on the human body, including points on the REN and DU Channels, upper thoracic, abdominal region, the back, and points around the neck. Among the categories of points covered include Back Shu points, points of Entry and Exit, points on the Inner and Outer Bladder Lines, Kidney chest points, and Windows of the Sky. Professor Neil Gumenick has been teaching point location to students for over 3 decades and has been in full-time practice since 1981. In this webinar series, he will discuss how to best position the patient, how to identify appropriate physical landmarks, measuring distances, and finally locating, by palpation, the exact point. Power point photos of actual patients and anatomical diagrams will accompany Neil’s precise descriptions. Session 2 covers the chest and abdomen, including selected points on the REN channel, Kidney, Stomach, and Spleen.
