This discussion will include theories of etiology, progression & risks of epidemics framed in Wen Bing theories. According to Wu You-Ko, the patriarch of the Wen Bing School, pestilent diseases are a result of airborne or oral pathogens. Each pathogen follows a specific course of progression, warranting different treatment strategies.

Skin disorders in their various forms are amongst the most common diseases suffered by mankind, accounting for no less than 1 in 5 of all visits to out-patients departments in the Western world. Despite this prevalence and the resources put into this field, many patients are dissatisfied with the conventional treatments available to them, and look elsewhere for solutions. In fact, Chinese herbal medicine has a very real and enduring answer for a significant number of sufferers of many chronic diseases of the skin such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea etc. Since dermatology is essentially a visual art, a great deal of information can be gleaned from detailed inspection of the way skin diseases manifest. In this short webinar, Mazin will outline some of the axiomatic concepts of Chinese medicine dermatology, using many photographic images and some case examples to illustrate the fundamentals that are required in understanding and treating skin disease.
Mazin graduated as Doctor of Chinese Medicine from the Shanghai College of TCM in 1987. He specializes in the treatment of dermatological, allergic & auto-immune diseases, lecturing widely on these subjects. Mazin is the founder of the International TCM Dermatology Association, author of numerous articles and co-author of the international textbook A Manual of Acupuncture.

See In StoreThe goal of this course is to provide a broad overview of the root causes of chronic disease seen today in modern societies. Root causes of disease come from our toxic environment, exposure to infectious agents, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal disruption and imbalanced immunity. These insults create chronic inflammation and oxidative stress that damage cellular function, promoting chronic illness. This discussion will review each causative factor, its impact on health, and current approaches to treatment. It will integrate treatments used in Chinese medicine, Naturopathic medicine and Western medicine. Regardless of the paradigms you offer in your practice, one approach is often limited in therapy. Having multiple skill sets to approach a complex problem offers greater opportunity for restoring health. This course will bridge the East and West to provide a holistic perspective on chronic illness, with clinical pearls that can be applied right away.
Dr. Levy is a primary care physician with twenty-eight years of Chinese Medicine experience. He uses his diverse skill set to provide expertise in topics including age-related cognitive decline, supportive care for cancer patients, auto-immune diseases, and chronic illness.

Xiao Chai Hu Tang is one of the most important formulas from the Shang Han Lun, and with over 2000 years of clinical experience behind, still one of the most widely and effectively used for a host of commonly seen ailments. This talk explores the popularity and dynamics of Xiao Chai Hu Tang, and goes beyond the usual shao yang/lingering pathogen narrative. We expand the understanding of Xiao Chai Hu Tang from a formula used for infectious processes, into one that is capable of managing some of the most common health issues of the modern world, and the reasons for this. We will see how understanding the structure and function of XCHT, and its related group of formulas, can assist in uncovering and elucidating the causes, pathology and solutions to the problem of chronic inflammation, or persistent heat in the language of Chinese medicine.

This audio/visual course by master acupuncturist Kiiko Matsumoto presents a detailed approach to common, severe digestive problems. It includes a presentation of the 9 Star system, which is a foundational part of Chinese Medical thought. In Chinese Medical theory, the 5 Elements/10 Stems are considered related to the heavenly level. The 12 branches, 12 meridians, 12 yearly cycles are considered related to earthly level. The middle level between these is the 9 stars, the human level, between heaven and earth. Each section of the nine star map relates to one of the five elements, and 3 of the 9 star areas relate to Earth. This class discusses these positions of the earth element on the abdomen, the direct relationship to the small intestine, and many digestive disorders that reflect on the abdomen (hara) with this exact pattern of pressure pain. Theory and didactic information is given on how to approach digestive disorders that may clearly have the diagonal 9 Star pattern of earth/small intestine pressure pain on the abdomen (hara), A base treatment of left SI 3, right Bl 62 is worked up, with multiple variations. Emotional and physical trauma accompany many painful digestive conditions, and is addressed using acupuncture points over related brain pain/memory areas.
Kiiko Matsumoto is a licensed acupuncturist, internationally recognized for her scholarly work interpreting the Chinese Classics and her unique and practical acupuncture style that integrates the work of important Japanese masters. An author on numerous acupuncture texts, she maintains a private practice in Boston and frequently lectures around the world.

See In StorePersistent infection and chronic immune dysfunction are common problems in the clinic. They may be due to an unresolved or persistent viral, bacterial, amoebic or fungal infection, or the result of an immune imbalance due to an immune reaction to chemicals, chemotherapy, radiation or severe emotional trauma. Clinical experience shows that pathogens that get trapped in the body tend to be located in distinct and clearly defined locations. These locations can be precisely determined. The types of pathogens involved also tend to transform once in the body into one of only two types. The key to expelling (venting) pathogens from the body and correcting the immune dysfunction is to clearly determine the type of pathogen involved and its precise location. This course presents an accessible and user friendly model that facilitates the analysis of the location and nature of the most commonly seen types of lingering pathogen. The model presented is based on twenty five years of clinical experience with immune problems, and is the result of drawing together and hybridizing the most clinically relevant sections of the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage) and We Re Lun (Treatise on Warm Diseases). In the first section, the model is presented systematically, with an emphasis on the specific signs and symptoms characteristic of linger pathogens, and the specific examination techniques used to elicit them. Each section is illustrated and the methodology reinforced by numerous cases from the presenters practice. In the second section, we will look at the special treatment strategies required to eliminate pathogens, repair any damage done, and restore balance to the body. Traditionally, the primary treatment method has been herbal, but the presenter finds that specific acupuncture protocols can be effective for some types of lingering pathogen. Specific formulas and acupuncture protocols will be discussed in detail.

Kiiko Matsumoto presents highlights on Du 16 from the Su Wen and Ling Shu, integrated into KMS (Kiiko Matsumoto Style) acupuncture. KMS acupuncture addresses each patient’s constitution/root, and addresses their chief complaint. Every patient is palpated, and feedback is used to select points that release that individual’s pain. The first half of the course focuses on the usage of Du 16 and KMS acupuncture for resolution of back pain. The second half of the course is on the usage of Du 16 and KMS acupuncture for resolution of shoulder pain. Acupuncture points all over the body are discussed, tested for their effects, and used to resolve diverse complaints.

Depression is one of the most commonly seen disorders. It is estimated to affect roughly 350 million people throughout the world, both in developed countries as well as developing countries. The WHO assesses that by the year 2020 depression would be the second most influencing cause of debilitated quality of life. Antidepressant medication side effects include: Sluggishness, drowsiness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, increased/loss of appetite, weight gain, loss of sexual appetite, blurred vision, insomnia and depression. From one aspect, Dr. Robidoux summarizes a 5 year long research carried out at “The Affiliated Brain Hospital” in Nanjing which has proven and confirmed that acupuncture has important advantages in treatment of depression when compared with SSRi without showing any negative side effects. She also brings about effective treatment protocols and approaches to treat the syndrome causing depression and other psychosomatic disorders such as OCD and anxiety. From another aspect, Dr. Robidoux presents a classical approach to understand the mechanism of the body and mind causing depression from different internal and external aspects. She covers the diagnostic methods and the treatments to reverse the progression and resolve the symptoms successfully. By providing a short introduction of the two main classical Chinese medicine approaches, Dr. Robidoux increases the understanding of the body and mind connection in depression to bring a clear understanding of the effective treatment protocol for different patient types.
