We should be empowering our patients to help themselves. What better way to do that than give them info for having Chinese herbal formulas in their medicine cabinet to help with minor medical conditions. In this course, we will look at relatively easy to find prepared herbal medicines everyone should have in their medical cabinet. We we discuss the conditions they treat, how to use them, and any cautions. As a bonus, each participant will receive a free copy of the upcoming ebook (when available): “Dragons in the Medicine Cabinet, Chinese Herbal Medicines Everyone Should Have at Home.” Conditions covered include, but are not limited to, colds, bleeding, burns, digestive complaints, headaches, and sinusitis.

Elements of old trauma can be relived with sensory and emotional intensity. Even so, the patients often do not have a clear recollection or precise memory about what happened. But their body does. Energetic patterns set up in the body can “run” the system. Once you discover the patterns, they can be unraveled with acupuncture.

We generally know how herbs work either from Chinese or scientific theory or a combination of both. But why do they work? What in the history of plants, animals, and evolution created the benefits of these healthy little bundles? This lecture will examine these questions, in a mind-opening and scientific (but not overwhelming) approach, by exploring Gaia theory, planetary autopoiesis, DNA, and Plant–Human Coalitions.
Dr. Greg Sperber is an author and also holds a Masters and Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. He is a professor at PCOM and speaks internationally on TCM business and drug-herb interactions.
In this course David will be reviewing all of the available pediatric ready-made formulas that can be bought online. There are a number of companies making herbal formulas specific to children, but figuring which one to use and when can be difficult. Plus, many of the formulas overlap in their functions, making it further difficult to understand which formulas are useful for specific ailments. The course is designed to be used as reference material for practitioners to refer to when deciding which formulas to prescribe. Formulas examined treat syndromes such as external attack, cough, pneumonia, asthma, bedwetting, constipation, diarrhea, digestive weakness, and mental emotional disorders such as ADHD and insomnia. Each formula is described according to which herbs it contains, what symptoms it treats, and is then compared to other similar formulas to help practitioners understand which formula is best in a particular situation. Companies examined include Blue Poppy, Kan Herbals, Golden Flower, Little Treasures (Su Wen), Little Fishes (China Herb Co), Health Concerns, and Cathay Herbal (Australia). The video lecture also includes a power point designed to used as a reference text.

Xiao Chai Hu Tang is one of the most important formulas from the Shang Han Lun, and with over 2000 years of clinical experience behind, still one of the most widely and effectively used for a host of commonly seen ailments. This talk explores the popularity and dynamics of Xiao Chai Hu Tang, and goes beyond the usual shao yang/lingering pathogen narrative. We expand the understanding of Xiao Chai Hu Tang from a formula used for infectious processes, into one that is capable of managing some of the most common health issues of the modern world, and the reasons for this. We will see how understanding the structure and function of XCHT, and its related group of formulas, can assist in uncovering and elucidating the causes, pathology and solutions to the problem of chronic inflammation, or persistent heat in the language of Chinese medicine.
A graduate of the Sydney College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Will Maclean, M.Sc.Chin. Med, Dip.TCM, Cert. Chin. Med, trained in China, and has practiced TCM for over 25 years. An author, Will teaches internationally and speaks on topics pertaining to acupuncture and herbal medicine.
Practitioners of TCM/TCVM have often noticed that there is a supportive effect with acupuncture and herbal medicine that helps to provide our patients with more physical energy. Why this happens has only been able to be described on a TCM theory level. Current research shows that from a cellular aspect, the function of the mitochondria supports the organism in a manner very much like how the function of Qi is described in the classics. In this presentation, we examine mitochondrial function as an aspect of Qi and consider the links between how Qi has been described historically, and how we know the mitochondria work today. Then, we look at the effects of acupuncture and TCM herbal medicine on the function of the mitochondria. We examine some of the current experimental evidence and design that brings to light the effect of acupuncture and herbal medicine on cellular energetics at a mitochondrial level. Information provided in these lectures can help practitioners build a bridge of communication between the conventionally trained healthcare practitioners and those of us who practice TCM/TCVM.

In the first part of this talk, practitioners will learn to understand the diagnosis of autism and ADD/ADHD. We will review the requirements for a diagnosis of these conditions from a Western medical perspective. We will then review how to understand the diagnosis from the perspective of Chinese medicine. Practitioners will also learn how to approach and treat these children with both acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas. Then, ADD/ADHD will be examined in more detail; with the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD and autism becoming a very common occurrence, many practitioners are seeing an increase in the number of parents looking for alternatives for their children. Acupuncture and herbs have proven very effective in managing both autism and ADD/ADHD; therefore, acupuncturists and herbalists are uniquely poised to provide specialized treatments and advice that parents cannot obtain anywhere else. We will dive deeper into the Chinese medical understanding of ADD/ADHD and autism and further refine 5-element types and pattern diagnosis. Treatment protocols for both acupuncture and herbal interventions will be shared for the most common problems areas. Practitioners will leave feeling confident in treatments including dietary advice, acupuncture points, and herbal formulas.

You can know exactly where to place acupuncture needles, and why. Learn to detect, with your hands, the exact location of Channel Qi aberrations - the root of all mental and physical illness. Then discover specific styles of needle insertion that directly restore correct Channel flow at the point of the aberration – as opposed to hit-or-miss, hope-for-the-best treatments. Channel Qi aberrations, classically referred to as “Channel Qi Doesn’t Go Through,” are the energetic drivers behind all health problems. Channel Qi blockages occur in highly specific, individualized locations – and you can detect these with your hands. These blockages force the Channel Qi into aberrant patterns, which then lead to compromised health. Stubborn physical or emotional blockages are only rarely diminished by distal-point or “indicated point” treatments. But when you breach these Channel Qi obstructions by strategic needling in the exact vicinity of the blockage, instantaneous healing often ensues. You already have an innate ability to detect Channel Qi. Develop it. Please note: It is highly recommended you complete at least one of these prerequisite items prior to completing this course: Watch a 1-hour recording of Janice's Advanced Channel Theory presentation and/or read the first 4 chapters of Tracking the Dragon, by Janice Walton-Hadlock. Registrants of this course should also try feeling Channel Qi prior to the course so that they have a sense of their ability.

See In StorePersistent infection and chronic immune dysfunction are common problems in the clinic. They may be due to an unresolved or persistent viral, bacterial, amoebic or fungal infection, or the result of an immune imbalance due to an immune reaction to chemicals, chemotherapy, radiation or severe emotional trauma. Clinical experience shows that pathogens that get trapped in the body tend to be located in distinct and clearly defined locations. These locations can be precisely determined. The types of pathogens involved also tend to transform once in the body into one of only two types. The key to expelling (venting) pathogens from the body and correcting the immune dysfunction is to clearly determine the type of pathogen involved and its precise location. This course presents an accessible and user friendly model that facilitates the analysis of the location and nature of the most commonly seen types of lingering pathogen. The model presented is based on twenty five years of clinical experience with immune problems, and is the result of drawing together and hybridizing the most clinically relevant sections of the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage) and We Re Lun (Treatise on Warm Diseases). In the first section, the model is presented systematically, with an emphasis on the specific signs and symptoms characteristic of linger pathogens, and the specific examination techniques used to elicit them. Each section is illustrated and the methodology reinforced by numerous cases from the presenters practice. In the second section, we will look at the special treatment strategies required to eliminate pathogens, repair any damage done, and restore balance to the body. Traditionally, the primary treatment method has been herbal, but the presenter finds that specific acupuncture protocols can be effective for some types of lingering pathogen. Specific formulas and acupuncture protocols will be discussed in detail.

If you are an English speaker, you may have a very incorrect idea of what is meant by the Chinese colloquial phrase “Balancing Yin and Yang.” Loosely translated, this phrase means anything from “let’s mix things up” to “let’s make things better.” Then again, the phrase means something very different in classical Taoist Chinese, where it means the same as the ancient Greek idea of the same era: “balancing body and mind.” Which refers to lifestyle choices, and isn’t something that we can treat using medicine. Learn more about this history of this concept and what it means for us in the field of Chinese medicine. This lecture is the last of three that address common mistranslations from the Chinese into English. After a discussion of Balancing Yin and Yang, the lecture makes a foray into a new field altogether: channel theory and it’s applications, starting with an example of treating asthma.

In this advanced course, Susan Johnson discusses various clinical applications of Tung's Points. For those that are new to Tung's Points, you may want to take the Beginning Series beforehand, but it is not absolutely necessary, and not required. Please click the link below for a detailed outline of topics and applications covered in this course.
A graduate of the ACTCM, Susan Johnson, L.Ac., has been practicing TCM for over 30 years. She studied extensively with Drs. Miriam Lee and Young Wei Chieh, and teaches Tung's Points internationally.
In this recorded webinar, Dr. McKinney takes a detailed look at how chemotherapy outcomes can be improved by integrative medicine. The webinar begins by discussing how significant increases in efficacy (namely response rate and cure rate) are obtained with immune support, cell cycling management, and inhibition of resistance mechanisms with which cancer cells defend themselves. Dr. McKinney then covers how the correct use of nutraceuticals, IV therapies, acupuncture, botanicals, and TCM herbs can lead to significant improvements in the quality of life of a chemotherapy patient. Herb-nutrient interactions with drugs will be explored, and the antioxidant vs. Chemo myth will also be debunked. With medicines such as mistletoe, reishi, quercitin, Protectival, cannabis, melatonin, vitamin B-12, acetyl-L-carnitine, co-enzyme Q-10 and other common agents, practitioners of all types can have a huge impact on the risk of harm versus chance of benefit from these toxic chemotherapy agents. After the allopathic focus of chemotherapy, you, as an integrative health care practitioner have the ability to provide incredible support to the chemotherapy patient through detoxification and education of positive changes in lifestyle, body-mind-spirit, and nutrition to support long-term health.
In practice for over 30 years, Dr. Neil McKinney, ND, has extensive experience in Naturopathic Oncology as well as Naturopathic Medicine. He graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine and is a founder and instructor at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine; in addition, he founded the BCNA, instructs internationally, and is an author on naturopathic topics.

We may not be able to predict all drug-herb interactions, but we can determine potentials for interactions. This one-hour webinar examines how to approach these potential drug-herb interactions. A discussion of protein binding, cytochrome P450, and the therapeutic index form the foundation of this understanding. You will leave with real skills to assess potential interactions. This webinar is based on Dr. Sperber's book Integrative Pharmacology: Combining Modern Pharmacology and Chinese Medicine, written with Bob Flaws.
Dr. Greg Sperber is an author and also holds a Masters and Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. He is a professor at PCOM and speaks internationally on TCM business and drug-herb interactions.
