Merlin Young

Biography

Merlin Young is one of the founders of the Moxafrica charity and is a long-time practitioner of the Toyohari style of acupuncture.
He lives and practices in Birmingham, UK, but spends much of his time working for the charity as well as researching and writing about moxa and drug-resistant tuberculosis which he sees has been shamefully neglected as a crisis in public health.
He has written extensively on both moxa and Moxafrica. In particular he is the author of 'the Moon over Matsushima' (that has been described as the 'book that had never been written on moxa but should have been') as well as 'Blowing in the Wind, MDR-TB and the Poor' (which he believes is the book that SHOULD AND COULD have been written by others far more qualified to do so than himself to properly identify the ravages inflicted on the most vulnerable by this ancient infection).
He has presented and taught about moxa in many different locations and venues. Among many, these include a scary presentation at the grand UNESCO headquarters in Paris, teaching health workers in the rural countryside of North Korea, woring inthe heart of a city slum in Angola, as well as in Uganda, and in the township in Capetown that was later revealed to be the murder capital of the world at the time. Most terrifyingly of all for him, however, was walking intothe biggest conference hall he has ever seen in Kunming, China where he was scheduled to present with a dying battery in his laptop.
He is passionate about moxa – and loves to share his enthusiasms because of how much he believes it to be undervalued - as well as some of what he has learnt along the way. Most of all, though, he wants to share his conviction that moxa offers itself today as a viable public health intervention wherever biomedical resources are failing (i.e. unfortunately almost everywhere), and that it may have a much wider range of applications than we may imagine.
Some of Moxafrica's peer-reviewed published research for moxa and TB (in his view!) testifies to this claim. He just wishes that what it reveals might be noted by those entrusted with responsibility for the health and security of their poorer constituents.
One of his teachers encouraged him many years ago to undertake whatever he might commit himself to with utmost seriousness, but to never take himself too seriously. Merlin decided some years back that that this was such sound advice as a way of staying sane in an essentially ever more insane world.
